For year 2, this week is revision of adding and subtracting tens in 2-digit numbers, adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers and number bonds to 100.

Spellings  - al and all making the 'or' sound

Can you find the  'al' or 'all' words in the paragraph below which make the 'or' sound? These are your spellings for this week
There was once a very tall man called Mr Chalk who lived with his dog, cat and also a cheeky hamster. Every day, he put on his hat and coat in the hallway, picked up a ball and called, ‘Come on, Fido! It’s time for your walk.’ Fido and his owner always went the same way so that Mr Chalk could have a talk with his friend Bob at his flower stall in the market. One day, as they passed the old castle walls, they noticed a strange shape stalking along through the grass. Just then, the rain started to fall in enormous splashy drops so they forgot the odd shape and ran to the market hall as fast as they could

Geography - Look at a map of the world. Discuss the following
Can you find where we live? (England/United Kingdom) What countries are near ours? Can you find any other countries you have heard of? Are they near or far from England? What else have you noticed on the map? Do you know any very cold or very hot countries?



Science - The Environment 
Read through the PowerPoint (Climate Change PP) and then do the experiment to help you to learn more, if you want to record your results you can use this Activity Sheet

DT - This half term I will be asking you to research, design, make (if you can) and evaluate something so before we start, this week I would like you to learn about all the things we need to think about before we even start Designing

Story: There has been a huge increase in people wanting to work in the healthcare sector recently.

Question:  Why do people choose the jobs they do?

We would like you to learn more about the Churches in your local area. 
What are they called? How are they the same and how are they different? 
Think about why they are special to some people. Talk to people who have been inside to find out more about what is the same and different inside and why that might be.
 Can you work out what all or most Churches seem to have?
You could also research 1 or more of the Churches and find about their history 
or even do some Art or DT work inspired by them.

Happy Half Term to everyone in Calder Class. We won't be setting any 'work' to complete this week as we think both the children and parents/carers deserve a break! 

If you fancy doing something to challenge yourself though do keep on practising your tables on TT Rockstars and continue with any work you haven't had chance to get done so far. Read your favourite books, sing your favourite songs, get some exercise, help out with jobs at home, but most importantly keep being kind to your family! My family decided we needed a bit more positivity at home so we all thought of the thing we love the most about each other and the thing that makes us laugh the most about each other. Why not try it with your family? It was lovely to hear such kindness being spread. Apparently I am good at cuddles and singing silly songs I've made up! What will your loved ones say about you?

Hello to all of our wonderful children at Carlton-in-Snaith Primary School! I have received a letter from Bruno at TT Rockstars and I thought I would share it with you.

Now, I always say we should aim high but even if you don't quite manage the super tough world record of over 150 in a single studio game, we would love to see your efforts. See how close you can get, can you beat your highest score? 

As Bruno explains, studio games include all of the times tables and associated division facts but as I regularly tell the children in Calder Class, it doesn't matter if you get any wrong- just keep going and see how many you can get right! Before you know it, you'll be getting higher and higher scores. Don't forget Percy Parker to help you learn the tables too (find him on YouTube) the songs are super catchy!

Times Tables Rock Stars have gotten in touch with GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS After some conversations they have created a new title - "the highest score achieved on ‘Times Tables Rock Stars in one minute!"
To make an Official Attempt, players need to record a video of themselves achieving their highest score in the Studio* and send the video to support@mathscircle.com by 23:59 UK time on 4th June 2020.

The highest scores we've seen over the years have been 150+ in a single Studio game so we know the standard for this global title will be high.

Books to share with your children.


Children being exposed to books beyond which they can read is an important part of the curriculum, so at school adults regularly read to the children. It inspires imaginations, models how to use fluency and expression when reading, introduces new vocabulary, supports comprehension plus many, many more things.

Epic is the leading Digital Library for children under 12.
They are currently offering a Free 30 Day Trial.


If your child has read all of the Read Write Inc books on Oxford Owl then this link will take you to all the other Phonics based sets of books including Oxford Reading Tree and the Project X books, many of which are written by fantastic authors such as Julia Donaldson.

Reading at Home



For those of you beginning to run out of books for your children to read or for you to read with your children, over the next few days we will be suggesting places where you can find many more. 
With the emphasis very much being on reading for pleasure.
Whilst your child continues to read to you- books that they can decode using their phonics, there is no reason you cannot enjoy a wider variety of books together!

I've received a lovely update from Freya's mummy. Freya has already managed to create her portrait of the queen and it is fantastic! Freya and her family are planning a forest walk to hunt for materials to make a hedgehog and Freya has had two special visits from the Tooth Fairy within the last three weeks! Wow! Freya has also celebrated her birthday over the weekend and look at that beautiful cake and sleepover set up for Freya and her little brother to enjoy. Happy birthday Freya! Love from us all in Calder Class xx

Week 5 English Tasks (plus daily reading) 



A Tale of Two Feathers Comprehension (There are 3 levels of questions - the children can choose which level they would like to attempt)


Spellings - Suffixes '-ment' and '-ness' 
The suffix '-ment' is added at the end of a noun which denotes an action or a process, for example, the action of wonder would become wonderment. The suffix ‘-ness’ changes an adjective to a noun and means ‘the state of being’, for example, the state of being happy or sad. 
Can your child add the correct suffix to the following root words and spell them correctly both with and without the suffix?

Week 5 Wider Curriculum Tasks

History - Here are 3 pictures of Queens, do you know who they are? Look at the pictures, what clues do they have to help you guess when they were on the throne? Do you know which Queen came first? How do you know? Do you know which Queen came second? What helped you to work it out?
   

    Science - What is a food chain? Watch the video and learn all about different animals and plants and how they make a food chain. Then see if you can answer the questions on the quiz. 



    Art - Look at these famous portraits of the Queen, which is your favourite and why?

    Why don't you have a go at creating a portrait of the Queen? You can choose any style and use any thing you want to create it. I can't wait to see your finished pieces!

    Forest School - Click on the link and choose an activity or two, Forest School Activities perhaps the children can lead the adults, as some of these activities are ones the children have done at school.


    Mrs Gay says that clay can be substituted for mud and water and to please make sure you have parental supervision if using any tools.

    🌟Mrs Burton's Ongoing Project - Who is your hero?🌟
    When I was in primary school I did a project all about my hero. It took me weeks! I learned lots of facts, made a booklet, drew and cut out pictures, and I can still remember facts about Gary Winston Lineker now! So it's your turn, choose someone who you admire, learn all about them, then show what you know in whatever way you want e.g scrapbook, PowerPoint, poster. This should be a project you work on over the next few weeks rather than complete in 1 session.
