Yesterday (Thursday 23/4/20) I went for a walk with my family to try and find micro habitats and habitats in our local area.
Below are some pictures that we took of what we think are the habitats

Birds nest in a tree

A very small Hole in the ground maybe where worms, ants or bees live (some bees live in the ground)

A mole hill where the mole pushes extra soil out of the ground as they live in tunnels underground

These aren’t a home but are where rabbits or hares sit to hide when scared.

This is possibly the entrance to a rabbit warren or a water vole home as it’s at the side of a dyke. 

There were some small insects on the water called ‘water boatmen’ and in the plants could live frogs, tadpoles, flies, fish and newts

This is another hole in the dyke edge but could be where rats live

This is a very big hole leading into a warren type den I think because it’s a big one it could be where a fox lives as it looks too big for a rabbit.

Science- Habitats and microhabitats

Well we had an exciting day in my household earlier this week. We decided to clean out the water feature in our garden as it had become very green and murky. When we moved the rocks what should we find but... a frog! Then another... then another... We found 15 altogether!

We popped them in a large bucket with some water and a rock to keep them safe whilst we cleaned the bottom of the water feature.

Then when it was all clean we popped them back in to their home!

Now here is the interesting part; ever since we have cleaned the habitat and it has no more algae or murky water, we have not seen a single frog here! Could you have a think about why this could be?

Look at this lovely message from Charlie's mummy.

'Charlie and Albie really enjoyed watching the habitats video online, Albie especially liked the polar bears!! We have looked under a piece of log and some rocks in our garden and found wood louse, ants and larva, Charlie has looked for some more habitats and microhabitats on his daily exercise. He found snails and ants and beetles . He also saw horses in their field.'

Freya's mummy has sent me a lovely message and some fantastic pictures of Freya busy with all of her activities!

'We've tried lots of different arts and crafts activities; making plaster of paris and painting ballerina fridge magnets, aquabeads (that Freya is very good at spotting patterns), pottery, play doh, baking and icing of biscuits and buns, crafting models out of toilet rolls, and painting. We've also tried out some science using Galt Toy kits and have made clouds in a jar but the most popular experiment was making a water rocket that Freya shot so high, it hit our roof! There's been plenty of reading and we are looking forward to reading Charlie and The Chocolate Factory together. We've got the Rainbow Magic Colour Fairies books on order (and Mummy has also ordered the Magic Faraway Tree series that she used to love!).

On top of that, we've had den making, trampolining, out walking and Freya can now stand up on her pedals to cycle. We've also homed five caterpillars from Insect Lore which have turned into chrysalises and we are now waiting for them to turn into butterflies. Due to the warm weather this batch of caterpillars have grown much quicker than the last batch that we grew at the end of last summer.'

A lovely message from Harry and family too!

Harry and his brother have spent the afternoon exploring the garden hunting for bugs to catch in their bug catcher. Once they had caught the bugs they looked in their book to see what they had caught and then drew them and wrote about them. They caught 2 worms, a spider and a centipede. Harry tried to catch two butterflies but they flew away!!!

Well done Harry, super bug exploration!

Brooklynn and her family have been super busy over Easter. 

'We made an Easter cake the other day (I was going to make a small one but they insisted it had to have 4 tiers!) she has also lost another tooth which she finds hilarious and keeps referring to herself as “the gummy bear”!'

Phonics- Read, Write, Inc. Phonics Sessions - Look for set 3!

Spellings- Adding endings ‘-ing’,‘-ed’, ‘-er’, and ‘-est’ to words ending in ‘-y’. Use the following words: 
copy, worry, happy, cry, reply, funny. Ask your child to say the words out loud, can read them independently and understand what they mean before you begin to practice spelling. Then ask them to say the words with the different suffix options above and tell you which 'sound' correct. Do they understand the new meaning of the word? Can your child spell all of the given words both as the root word and with its correct suffix independently? Can they use the words (both root and with correct suffix) in sentences verbally and written? Can they write any more words in this way? Choosing the correct suffix and spelling accurately? Children should use strategies we practised at school to learn their spellings- they will know what these are (rainbow writing, pyramid writing, bubble writing, look cover write check etc). Ask your child to write some silly sentences using their newly learned words. How many can they fit into one sentence? E.g. 'The worm was worried about replying to the bird's invitation because he wanted to make him happier'. They could make a poster using all of their spelling strategies to display their new learning!

🌟Mrs Burton's Ongoing Project - Who is your hero?🌟

When Mrs Burton was in primary school she did a project all about her hero. It took her weeks! Mrs Burton learned lots of facts, made a booklet, drew and cut out pictures, and she can still remember facts about Gary Winston Lineker now! So it's your turn, choose someone who you admire, learn all about them, then show what you know in whatever way you want e.g scrapbook, PowerPoint, poster. This should be a project you work on over the next few weeks rather than complete in 1 session.

This week BBC Bitesize are launching BBC Bitesize Daily which teachers will be looking closely at this week so this may become part of the work we set next week, feel free to have a look yourselves.

He loves the emoji code breaker packs on Twinkl and has been making massive minecraft drawings. This weekend we’ve got plans to make a big obstacle course in the garden and we’re going to be camping overnight in the garden weather permitting! Hope you’re all well. Egg Decorating

Charlie has been very busy today, this morning he did Maths and English and this afternoon he’s been helping to make a cake with Billy and Albie for Albie's birthday tomorrow.  We’ve also made a salt dough lockdown handprint which is baking and we will paint tomorrow, can you guess which is his?  ☺️

Story starter!

Most visitors are a little shocked (to put it mildly) when they arrive at Animal Town. Despite the fact that the name of the town gives a slight indication to passers-by that the inhabitants of the town are ‘not normal’, it’s as if people don’t believe things until the see them with their own eyes!

Once you get used to being in Animal Town – or so they say – seeing an orangutan behind a desk in a sheriff’s office and upholding the law to an impeccably high standard becomes relatively ‘normal’…
